The morning started out earlier then usual, and since my roommate and I have a microwave in our room, my favorite breakfast of dinosaur egg instant oatmeal was on my agenda. Before I knew it we were off to be the audience of the live show C-SPAN, and have the opportunity to have our voices heard. The speaker that I found most interesting to listen to was Josh Earnest, the presidents assistant. He allowed me to further understand issues that our president is facing and what his plans are to deal with them. His discussion on the debt ceiling also raised my attention dramatically.

Shortly after, my friends and I were able to tour around the National Mall. Our first stop was lunch at McDonald’s, and I was thoroughly excited because I had a fruit and yogurt type of food. I had been wanting fruit and yogurt together for the past two weeks so our lunch just made my day! After eating, we traveled to the Natural History Museum and went through many exhibits with great interest. However, our way back to the bus consisted of a heavy down pour that drenched practically everyone! What was even better about this down pour was that I took my rain poncho out of my bag that morning!

After dinner, we had two more speakers left in our day. The first speakers that spoke about investigative journalism really caught my eye. The motivation they had to solve the murder case even with how many times they were pulled away inspired me. Our final speaker of the night, Dean Flagel, spoke about college admission and cracked quite a few laughs. It was a great reinsurance to be told that our grades in school are the majority of what colleges look at since I strive so hard to obtain my high grades.

On the other hand, I have an incoming call from my brother who is going to inform me on important topics for my congressional meeting tomorrow. I better get going!

My alarm clock shot through my ears this morning forcing me to roll out of bed. Of course this whole situation was made worse since the night before my roommate and I decided to stay up until two-o-clock in the morning. Wearily, I showered, dressed, and went to breakfast.

Our attendance of the Newseum in Washington, D.C. started off the day interestingly. The museum was amazing to walk through and you were able to see many things that happened in the past. My favorite part of the museum was my groups first place to visit, the Berlin Wall. The last few weeks of my junior year I had an exchange student from Germany living with me. The Berlin wall connected to me in a way that the other exhibits did not from her stories about the wall as well as how recently she stayed with me. Being able to see the wall was an amazing experience and a story that I will have to tell. On the down side of my museum trip, I managed to loose my camera at the very end of our visit. I was so frightened since the camera is my brothers and loosing it in general was simply awful! However, with some help from friends in my group, I was able to find the camera!

Tonight I went to two conferences; however, I wont tell you about the second conference since it was extremely boring. The speaker of my first conference was Rebecca Sheir, and she spoke on the topic of radio broadcasting. Mrs. Sheir hosts and produces the D.C. areas only local radio news-magazine the Metro Connection. The way she interacted with my group and related with us made it much easier to understand the main idea of radio broadcasting. Mrs. Sheir explained that the radio encourages you to paint a picture because it bridges imagination and reality. She had us listen to sound clips on how things are put together to paint a picture to the listener. By far she was my favorite speaker of the two and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her.

I have come across two goals for the night: my first goal for tonight is to be in bed and asleep by midnight! I am not sure how well that will end up working out though… On the other hand, my second and more important goal is that I want to stand out. I do not want to leave this conference and have everyone forget my name. I am looking to show who I am and prove that I am capable no matter what task is at hand!

My first hours of the Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason happened to be filled with many events and much suspension. After not only being at the conference for an hour and a half, I managed to lock my self out of my room after walking my mom to her car. What made that situation even better was that I was the first person to lock myself out! However, my problem was easily solved and I am sure many other students will lock themselves out as well. Waiting for my roommate to arrive, I was very excited as well as nervous, proved to be the suspension in my first few hours. Although I only have one roommate, we are getting along well and seem to have a lot in common!

Our first speaker today was most likely the most memorable speaker I will listen to throughout the conference. I was able to be the first student to talk in front of everyone as I introduced Mr. Chris Cillizza! Along with this, Mr. Cillizza graduated from Georgetown University, the University my brother is currently attending and I am looking to apply at. Mr Cillizza’s main topic of speech was the way that the media is changing. The analogy he used for this topic is what stood out to me the most. He explained that the media used to be like a meatloaf dinner, if you did not like it you had to deal with it. Mr. Cillizza used this to represent how few newspapers and media sources that were available not to long ago. He then represented the changed media as a buffet, you can now choose many foods to eat. This ‘buffet’ symbolized how many different sources we now have for news. Mr. Cillizza was inspirational in explaining that we have plenty of time and not to worry so much.

The start of the conference is going well and I see the same results for the rest of the week.

Hello! I am attending the journalism and media conference this summer. I am new to the world of blogging and I am still getting use to this website. However, I am ready for the experience to learn more about journalism and media!
I currently live in a small town in North Carolina, but I am from Long Island, New York. I have just recently turned 17, and I am very involved within my community. I love meeting new people and spending time participating in a variety of activities.
Please add me on facebook if your attending the conference as well!
